Education about music is widely available either formally (schools and conservatories) or casually in private lessons, by video, or over the internet. While growing up, I spent hours watching TV and was lucky if I got in more than two hours of piano practice in a week. It wasn’t for lack of opportunity. The piano was all of 10 feet away in the living room and there was plenty of sheet music in our house. I was just lazy.
Can We Turn It Around?
From what I’ve seen, I was par for the course. Most children don’t do much to develop themselves outside of school. Then again, most parents don’t push their children to grow either. Maybe as parents we’re too caught up in the idea that we want our children to “have a childhood” or we don’t want to push too hard because they may not like it or they may fail. I’ve found in my life that most of the things I’ve enjoyed most took a lot of effort to achieve and the pressure of failure is what caused me to grow and to succeed.
So, I challenge you kids and parents. Turn off the TVs and video games and start doing something productive. Parents, don’t be afraid to push your children. It’s ok if they fail, we all do, but help them learn from the failures and teach them to continue on until they succeed. One day they will thank you…and you will be thankful as well both because your children are successful and because they don’t live your basement.

A “phrase” in music is essentially a group of notes which has a complete musical sense of its own. To relate this to language, think of it as a complete thought, such as what a sentence of words expresses. In the same way that we consider a sentence, musicians consider the phrase.
The musician analyzes the musical phrase, starting with musical grouping, then sub-phrase, then phrase and finally, performance phrase. A musical grouping is a collection of notes in their most basic, irreducible combination, which, as a unit, still has a musical value. A sub-phrase is longer and consists of a few musical groupings. A phrase is even longer and consists of a few sub-phrases, and, as its own, communicates a complete musical meaning. A performance phrase is simply a longer and more elaborate phrase. Several phrases and/or performance phrases comprise a section in a musical piece.
To make the analogy again to language, this categorization is similar to the concept of having words, sentences and paragraphs. Let’s consider notes as comparable to letters, the most basic elements, and let’s consider sections as comparable to paragraphs. Of course, music and language are two different worlds, so this is only an analogy. Language is a means of communication as is music. Music, however, is a much more refined and higher level of communication. However hollister , using notes and phrasing is the form by which musicians can understand each other’s compositions, much the same way we use words and grammar to understand another’s verbal or written thoughts.
Here is a wonderful, basic exercise which you can do, whether you are a musician or not, to really comprehend phrasing in music. Take a recording of a familiar song or piece and analyze its phrases, which are composed of four- to twelve-bar lines. Position your arm to where you can do a waving or wiping motion, by extending it outward horizontally. While listening to the phrase, slowly move your arm in a semicircle from that position to the other side of your body. This should look exactly like you are slowly flagging down a vehicle. This motion should start as the phrase does and end when the phrase ends. Take a breath and do the same motion back in the other direction with the next phrase. Continue doing this until the end of the piece.
As punctuation marks such as periods, commas and semicolons in language indicate pauses for breath, similarly, you should take a breath at the beginning of each new cycle of each phrase, as indicated by the motion of your arm. If you were to try reading an entire paragraph without taking one breath or pausing, you’d become short of breath relatively soon. So, just as a reader reads naturally, taking the appropriate pauses and breaths where necessary cheap coach purses , a musician must do the same. However, as performing music requires considerably more energy than speaking or reading, this exercise, for a musician, should be done more emphatically. And the results will be a much more refined and articulate performance.
